new york city polaroid project

I went into Samy's Camera about a month ago to buy whatever they had left in the way of Polaroid film. None. It's gone. Thankfully someone like Andrew Faris got a hold of some of the few remainder boxes. His shots of New York, are great and graphic and very Polaroidy. You can order posters on his site as well.

johnny be good

Photographer, Johnny Miller's work, makes me want to crawl into each one of his shots and call it home.

I dug a little further into his site, and found these photos of letters between his parents when they were first dating.

Besides being so charming in content and beautifully shot, It turns out I actually have something in common with this Brooklyn based, Johnny Miller.

He grew up in the small town of Lawrence, Kansas where I went to college. To some of you this is a 'who cares' and Larry what?

but when living in L.A., unless you're a college sports fan, nobody it seems, knows what or where K.U. is.

So, whenever we find a fellow Jayhawker, we get a bit too excited. In the mean time, how about that chippendale chair with the aubergine fabric mixed with the brass Arco-esque lamp.....add a bit of olive and celedon green? yum.

saul leiter:: street scenes

Saul Leiter's vintage photography of urban winter streets, always seem to look warm and romantic from this beach, vantage point.

Having no formal training in photography, Leiter began shooting New York street scenes in the 1940s.

He once noted his love for using expired colored film for its result of surprising and odd shift in color.

Saul Leiter's work was the subject of a major 2008 exhibition at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris.

vivian maier:: unearthed

I ran across this blog the other day and find myself going back and back to take another look.

The haunting works of gritty street photographer Vivian Maier were discovered in a Chicago storage space whose contents were being auctioned off after delinquent payments.

Purchased by John Maloof, the 30- 40, 000 negatives, had been sitting, boxed and forgotten for years until Maloof began the process of sorting through, printing and researching the mystery of who Vivian Maier was.

The blog is a posthumous retrospection of the work of an indelible, prolific artist who managed not only to capture the man on the street, but deep emotion and something beyond the visage of an everyday pedestrian.

Maloof did a little research on Maier and the results are on his site as is a continuous update of her work.

Which, amazingly, turn out looking kind of cool in that really, static motion, inanimate object becomes living thing, sort of way { ya ok, whatever. }

Suddenly, task lighting become a research group on a hiking expedition through Antarctica,

or campers looking for the car keys Ron dropped last night after one too many 'brewski's

Vintage telephones becomes beached, animals in the frozen tundra.

toast

There are a few catalogs I receive that tend to stick around if only because they're beautiful collection of art. TOAST is one of them.

In the same vein as Anthropologie {another one of my favorites} the photos, are generally, gauzy and serene. Quiet. The product is in there but not blasting in your face.

If these catalogs were like a music box, that played when opened, I picture, gravely indie chick voices, slow and quiet with a simple chord leading their way.
